Masami Yamagiwa
b 1972 (Japan)
Masami Yamagiwa is a Japanese ceramist known for his distinctive, hand-built ceramic sculptures. Born in 1972 in Shiga Prefecture, he has been a resident artist at Atelier Yamanami since 1990.
Yamagiwa's practice involves creating numerous small, identical sculptures, often referred to as "Masami Jizo," which are representations of the Jizo bodhisattva. These figures are crafted with meticulous attention to detail and are produced in large quantities. Emphasising repetition and consistency, his work mirrors the structured environment of his daily life at Yamanami.
His art has been exhibited internationally, and was recently included in Thinking of Japan, A Meditation at Cavin-Morris Gallery in New York (2023). Additionally, his work featured in The Museum of Everything’s exhibition at Selfridges in London (2011).
