Woodbridge Figures
Discovered by construction workers in the clay pits of Woodbridge, New Jersey, this collection of carved armless figures is of unknown origin and purpose; yet their rosy cheeks and overt sexuality have defined them as one of the iconic collectables of American art brut. Dated to the early 20th century, the pieces may have been used in a game or ritual by a local community. In addition to the prominent genitals, several have plugs in their head with runic and/or sexualised markings, one or two have the remnants of clothing.
