From Wednesday 11th October 2023, The Gallery of Everything presents Judith Scott in Spotlight at Frieze Masters.
Judith Scott (1943 - 2005) is the Californian artist and sculptor whose work can be found in the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Brooklyn Museum (New York) and Tate Modern (London).
Non-verbal and diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Scott was hospitalised in her childhood and remained in state care until she was in her 40s. It was then that her twin sister Joyce enrolled her at the Creative Growth Center, an artistic community for neurodiverse and other individuals.
Creative Growth provided Scott with the inspiration and support to commence a sustained art practice. Binding found objects together with fabric, twine, cardboard and other materials, Scott produced a wide range of shapes and forms - from modest assemblies to large-scale soft sculptures.
Creative Growth was pivotal in bringing Scott's work to the wider arts community, both in her lifetime and after her death. In 2014, the Brooklyn Museum staged a retrospective of Scott's work, curated by White Columns’ director, Matthew Higgs.
Judith Scott is today acknowledged as the most important and recognisable neurodiverse artist in the world.
